2 million jobs lost so far in 2009

Unemployment is at 8.5%, which is a 25 year high. Two million jobs have been lost so far in 2009 and predictions are for around 600,000 more jobs to be lost in April. Job losses were felt in most industries, with the exception of education and health care. The average work week has been cut to 33.2 hours. Under employment stood at 15% in March with people settling for part-time work while looking for full-time work. Temporary work has been cut 20%. Once the length of the work week and temporary workers increases, the job market should start to turn around.

Zimbabwe cholera cases pass 60,000
art.child.afp.gi.jpg
More than 3,161 people have now been infected with cholera in Zimbabwe, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Since August of 2008, a total of 60,000 people have been infected. The World Health Organization is saying that drastic action is needed to stop one of the world’s largest outbreak of cholera. Cholera is a disease caused by bacteria in contaminated water. Because Zimbabwe is having both economic and political problems, there have been water supply shortages, water purification supply problems, and problems with uncollected garbage which can contaminate the water. There is also a 5 month long strike of doctors and nurses so there is not enough medical help.

Sen. Edward Kennedy Suffers a Seizure
On January 20th, senator of Massachusetts, Edward Kennedy, was removed from the post-inauguration luncheon after experiencing a seizure. Senator Kennedy had been recovering from brain surgery on a tumor that took place in June, and his family had been optimistic about his health. He was sent to the Washington Hospital Center, where he spent the night. The seizure is believed to be caused by fatigue, according to Dr. Edward Aulisi, chairman of neurosurgery. Senator Kennedy is now feeling better and was released from the hospital the next day.

Israeli troops complete Gaza withdrawal
The Israeli troops completely withdrew from Gaza on January 21st. Their campaign against the Hamas militants lasted three weeks and left more than 1,300 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead. The withdrawal of troops began on Sunday, although the confirmation of the Israeli withdrawal did not come until the day before Obama's inauguration. Obama had vowed to move swiftly on building a team to be engaged in the conflict. Israel and the United States will remain "full partners in advancing peace and stability in the Middle East."

This shows how Israel is hurting itself in the process of dealing with Gaza. This is because they look bad destroying Gaza because they clearly have more power and their retaliation is clearly out of proportion. This cartoon uses symbolism by showing Israel about to blow off it's own foot to deal with the snake, symbolizing the Hamas, which is biting it's foot.

mou.jpg
This cartoon shows the hard decision Israel had to make dealing with Gaza. If they continued to attack, they would have been thought of badly by the rest of the world. However, if they were to leave, Gaza would continue to launch rocket attacks at them.

Violence flares at Greek teen's funeral
Report 1
There have been many street riots against the Greek Prime Minister Konstandinos Karamanlis breaking out in Athens. On Tuesday a good 10,000 people marched on the country’s parliament arguing about how the government is corrupt. When the police came to control the rioters a 15 year old boy Alexandros Grigoropoulos threw a fuel filled bomb towards them. They shot the boy to death. Many people including his upset family members continued protesting along with many of the towns people. About 2,000 people attended the young boys funeral which took place on Tuesday of this week. At the end of the service some of the protesters started violence at the funeral making it even harder on the family members of Alexandros Grigoropoulos. During the night most of the residents of Athens paid their respects once again by a peaceful candle lit walk. The police officer that killed the boy was charged with manslaughter with intent. He was suspended from work and his trail takes place soon.

Celebrations take a holiday in Ohio city
The economy is ruining Christmas for many Americans. In Ohio 67% of 1,096 people said they are lowering the amount of gifts given to children and family members this year because of their money situations. Also 65% of those people said they were cutting back on dining out, movies, and other relaxing activities such as this. 31% of the same people said they have also had to cut down on things needed like food and medicine. 38% of those people also said they had to cut down on heat. Bob Zienkowski the town manager has been called Grinch and Scrooge because the state is facing a nearly $2 million budget shortfall this year. They usually have a holiday fair but this year they had to cut back on costs so the fireworks had to go along with other things such as Christmas lights. This made people angry, they e mailed him calling him Scrooge and other names such as this one but his reply was you can’t send money you don’t have. They have also eliminate jobs making about 20 citizens of the town out of work, and reduced the salting for the streets to save money.

A forest fire erupted late Friday, November 14 2008 in the steep terrain of the Angeles National Forest on the outskirts of Sylmar. it was moving one half mph to 1 mph and covered 1,500 acres and sadly, threatened at least 1,000 homes during only the three hours it had been reported. Four firefighters were injured during this, and more than 10,000 people were forced to immediately leave their homes in the northern san Fernando Valley. This fire caused more than 6,500 acres to burn and by 1 p.m. the fire was only 10 percent under control. By Saturday afternoon, people had to move to evacuation shelters that had been set up in three different high schools around that area. Animals had to be moved to a shelter as well, in Hansen Dam Park (small pets were taken to Mission animals shelters) Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger declared a state of emergency for Los Angeles County on Saturday afternoon after the fire damaged or destroyed more than 165 homes and closed major freeways.

piratecraft.gi.jpg

This article called “Q and A: Pirates of East Africa “ is about literally about pirates. They stole a very large supertanker carrying up to $100 million worth of oil, off the east coast of Africa. No one really suspected pirates to be a problem, but pirate activity has actually increased dramatically in the Gulf of Aden region. The Gulf of Aden is actually one of the two most dangerous waters on the planet. The other being The Horn of Africa. The International Maritime Board has reported over 80 attacks and over 30 successful hijackings in the region since the beginning of 2008. Other regions like Straits of Malacca and the Nigerian coastline are pirate hot spots as well, but not even close to The Gulf of Aden or The Horn of Africa.
Since the early 1990’s, Somalia hasn’t had an effective government and this model of a "failed state" is the best and foremost perfect environment for organized crime to bloom.
It is so easy for these pirates to “work” because Somalia's Transitional Federal Government hasn’t tried to make an effort to take them down. There is in fact, warships patrolling the region, but the operation area for the pirates has now reached to stretch over a million square miles.

This cartoon illustrates two things based in California. The first illustrated problem is is the Wildfires burning down forests in Southern California. This problem is illustrated by showing the burning log the bear is sitting on. The second thing illustrated in this cartoon is the fact that Gay marriage was voted illegal in California. If you’ve seen the California Republic flag before it shows two happy bears holding hands, representing gay marriage. Though because it was voted illegal the bear is sitting alone, on the burning log.

Elections 2008
On November 4, 2008 Obama was elected for President. He is the first African-American to be President in the United States. Obama also won the popular vote which is something that not many presidents win. Not only is he the first African-American president but he’s also the first Democrat president since President Clinton. Many states turned from Republican to Democrat during this election such as Iowa, Colorado, New Mexico, and Nevada. McCain told Obama that he was eager to work with him and told his supporters that he was sorry and that it was his fault, not theirs. Unfortunately his supporters boo-ed every time he mentioned the name Obama. Which is unfortunate because it shows that even McCain congradulated him and accepted the fact that he lost, but his supporters were not.

28plot-1.190.jpgTwo young men who are believers in “white power” have been arrested and charged in Tennessee in what federal officials described as a plan to assassinate Senator Barack Obama. Federal officials said that both of the men who were arrested — Paul Schlesselman, 18, and Daniel Cowart, 20,. — told interrogators that they had talked of assassinating Mr. Obama. The two men “planned to drive their vehicle as fast as they could toward Obama shooting at him from the windows,”. Mr. Obama has no plans to be in Tennessee, and the affidavit does not make clear whether the men had picked a place for an attack. Federal Officials said that the assassination was to be the culmination of a “killing spree” that would also single out children at an unnamed, predominately black school. The two racist men talked of “killing 88 people and beheading 14 African-Americans,” according to the affidavit. The numbers 88 and 14 have special significance in the white power movement. The number 88 is shorthand for “Heil, Hitler”. H is the eighth letter in the alphabet. 14 signifies a 14-word mantra among white supremacists: “We must secure the existence of our people and a future for white children.”
